APCO Announces 2008 Radio Frequency Technologist PSAP Award Winner

Mobile County (Ala.) Electronics Department Director of Public Safety Communications Eric Linsley Named Radio Frequency Technologist of the Year by APCO International

June 3, 2008, Mobile, Ala. - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International today announced the 2008 Radio Frequency Technologist of the Year Public Safety Award Program (PSAP) award to be presented to Eric Linsley, director of public safety communications for the Mobile County (Ala.) Electronics Department, at the Opening General Session of the APCO International 74th Annual Conference and Exposition in Kansas City, Mo. on August 4.

The Mobile County Electronics Department is under the Mobile County Public Works Department with an annual budget of $1.2 million and 13 employees. The Electronics Department is responsible for the maintenance of all electronic systems owned by the Mobile County Commission, including the county-wide public safety 800 MHz radio system, the computer radio dispatch consoles for the Mobile County Sheriff and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Departments, the county-wide mobile data system for the Mobile County Sheriff's Department, and county-wide automatic vehicle location system for the Mobile County Public Works.

Linsley has been in his current position since 2005. As head of the Electronics Department, his duties and responsibilities include: development, administration, and strategic planning for the mission critical public safety communications systems, contract negotiations and directing various Mobile County Electronic Systems Departments involved in the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of communications equipment.

"Eric meets and exceeds the professional standards of his field," Mobile County Commission Public Works Director Joe W. Ruffer, P.E., said in his nomination letter. "He has dedicated his career to the enhancement of public safety communications, and has a genuine love for his community and the safety and well being of its citizens. His innovative approach to problem solving has resulted in tremendous time and money savings for all affected agencies. He is a credit to our city, county, state, and the U.S.A."

Linsley's list of accomplishments includes leading Mobile County's transition to a county-wide 800 MHz communications system. In addition, he is acknowledged for his work throughout Hurricane Andrew and many other hurricanes, preparing the communications systems and volunteering to work through the storms.

"APCO International congratulates Eric Linsley on being named Radio Frequency Technologist of the Year," APCO International President Willis Carter said. "The work he has done in Mobile County is a great example of activities deserving of this great honor and the entire department should be proud of his award."

The APCO International 74th Annual Conference and Exposition will be held August 3-7 at the Kansas City Convention Center in Kansas City, Mo.
