APCO Announces 2008 Line Supervisor PSAP Award Winner

WHITCOM Regional 9-1-1 Center Dispatch Line Supervisor Susan Waltz Named Line Supervisor of the Year by APCO International

June 3, 2008, Pullman, Wash. - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International today announced the 2008 Line Supervisor of the Year Public Safety Award Program (PSAP) award to be presented to Susan Waltz, WHITCOM Regional 9-1-1 Center dispatch line supervisor, at the Opening General Session of the APCO International 74th Annual Conference and Exposition in Kansas City, Mo. on August 4.

WHITCOM is a regional 9-1-1 and dispatch center serving three counties in two states, dispatching law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services (EMS) for Whitman County and Asotin County in Washington State and Moscow Police Department and Latah County Rural Fire and EMS in Idaho.

Aside from her duties supervising during full dispatch shifts, Waltz is responsible for employee evaluations, employee counseling, new hire training, and schedule monitoring. She is also the public education coordinator, handles leave requests and monitors overtime, along with public records requests and agency relations. Waltz has been a supervisor at WHITCOM for almost three years, having been a dispatcher and lead at WHITCOM seven years prior to her promotion. She was also a dispatcher for Lewiston (Id.) Police Department and Washington State University prior to coming to WHITCOM.

"Susan has spent her career learning and contributing," WHITCOM Regional 9-1-1 Center Director Patti VonBargen said in her nomination form. "She is looked up to and
respected. She has given of herself over and over and asks for nothing in return."

Waltz is recognized for her dedication to customer service and diligence in continuing education and personal skill development. Her nomination included mention of Waltz"s work as the union president during WHITCOM"s inception and negotiation for the first union contract. In addition, Waltz was nominated because of her supervision during an active shooter incident in the area in 2007.

"APCO International congratulates Susan Waltz on being named Line Supervisor of the Year," APCO International President Willis Carter said. "The work she has done at WHITCOM is a great example of activities deserving of this great honor and the entire organization should be proud of her award."

The APCO International 74th Annual Conference and Exposition will be held August 3-7 at the Kansas City Convention Center in Kansas City, Mo.
